Mars Is Coming!; Dark Detroit Weblog Account; Erika Comes Ashore

Mars approaches! | NASA’s Mars Home | Mars Watch | More from SpaceWeather.com

Mike Wendland’s E-Journal weblog has a great first-hand account of a powerless Metro Detroit in its second day since the blackout of 2003.

Erika Arrives!

Erika Radar Image

More on Erika, which made landfall around 5 a.m. CT in Mexico, about 40 miles south of Brownsville, with winds of around 70 mph is in the entry below:

Blackout In Northeast

Massive power outages in the northwest from New York City to Detroit and Cleveland, Toronto, Columbus and much of New York, New Jersey, Ohio, Michigan, Ontario, Connecticut, and New Hampshire. It’s a grid shutdown from a fire at a NYC plant, not terrorism… Many of the sites that have webcams in those cities are obviously down… More on this story from MSNBC and Google

Here are some of the *very few* webcams still up and running:

Newark/NYC Hazecam

Hartford, CT Hazecam

Michigan Tech (Central MI) Stream

Also, try the links in this (one for the Iraqi war) video page for possible live newscasts from MSNBC in NYC/NJ and Cable Pulse 24 in Toronto, Canada

Tonight In North Fort Worth

Tonight I make an exception in the weblog. For the first time in its nearly 6 months online, there will be no links in an entry. Very strong thunderstorms rolled across much of Fort Worth and Dallas around 9 p.m. I was noticing what seemed to be the largest downpour, wind and lightning show I’d ever seen. It subsided, and as I looked around from my top-story bedroom window, I noticed a fairly small fire on the top of a roof in the subdivision next to us — just two blocks away. I called the TV station I work for and asked if they knew about it and they said, “The one on Kimbell?” An elderly couple’s new two-story home was struck by lightning and reportedly burned to the ground about 10 homes away. Thankfully, no one was injured as far as we know… Another home caught fire (only minor damage) just 5 homes away and fire crews are still at the scene of both. The smell of smoke is in the air, and dozens of us neighbors gathered outside our newly built homes, some of us meeting one another for the first time. All of this was happening during a power outage and amid surrounding storms. The power is back, but another storm is approaching. Very surreal.
