World Is Watching

Stream Of Local TV Storm Coverage: It isn’t just me. When hurricanes come ashore, people across the globe type their way to live streaming TV news coverage as it is broadcast via the Internet. It was interesting tonight hearing the anchors on the live stream of WPMI-TV 15 in Mobile talking about the e-mails they have received from all over the country and the world, including Iraq and Australia. Some watching have second homes in the Golf Coast, others want to know if they will have a place to vacation in the near future.

As for the rest of us: many turn to live TV and radio when weather is the news. I vividly remember driving from Dallas-Fort Worth to Oklahoma City in May 2003 and listening to KFOR-TV’s live storm coverage simulcast on KOMA-AM as tornadoes tore through the Metro OKC area and up Interstate 44, dangerously close to where listeners had taken shelter in a McDonald’s restaurant. It was incredible radio: Yelling … confusion, but strangely enough, comfort to those who were in the storm’s path and without power.

The station for live streaming during Hurricane Charley was NBC 2, Fort Myers. Days later, Hurricane Frances brought out some great wall-to-wall live streaming from local TV stations in Miami, Orlando, and Tampa. WTVJ-TV 6 in Miami received several viewer e-mails expressing thanks for the live stream for Hurricane Frances. Details in this video (Opens new window)

Now we’re up to Ivan. At least three local stations — WPMI-TV 15, Mobile, WWL-TV 4, New Orleans and WVTM-TV 13, Birmingham — were streaming their broadcast for a good portion of the day. And people from across the globe are very thankful … they will be back for the next round.

Stop The Madness! … Some Claim They Can

Hurricanes-B-Gone?: I spotted and included in this blog the latter article linked below a couple of days ago. And now this:

Groups are working to save the Sunshine State’s day… Among the amateurs’ ideas: “blowing hurricanes away with giant fans or blowing them up with nuclear warheads.” Full story

The article states that bloggers are among those claiming to have solutions (I am certainly not one of them, though I think praying doesn’t hurt).

Mind Over ‘Mat’ter?: Dyn-O-Mat COO Wants To Attempt To Reduce Hurricane’s Power

Top 5 WXnation.com city weather and webcam pages visited Friday through Sunday (same positions all three days, except Sunday, when Panama City moved into the No. 3 spot, knocking Miami and Tampa to No. 4 and No. 5): 1. Key West 2. Orlando 3. Miami 4. Tampa 5. West Palm Beach … See the top 20 so far this month in the left column of our home page.

Remembering 9/11

9/11 Remembered – Special coverage from WNBC-TV, New York

Still Intact: When I launched WXnation.com less than six months after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks and began building a directory of New York City webcams, I was reminded again of the broad impact it had on our country. Many Web sites running live webcams in and around Manhattan were frozen in time on the date of the attacks, much like a clock that is discovered stuck at the time of a major earthquake. A good number of webcam sites were shut down permanently. One that was added after 9/11 was the EarthCam Ground Zero Webcam — still intact today, much like our nation’s spirit. Another, World Trade Aftermath.com, retired one year ago today as the Tribute In Light lit the night sky.

High Traffic Takes Blog Offline

Apologies for the downtime Thursday because of high traffic (and a big thanks to all of you for visiting this page of weather info and musings, by the way). This blog was taken offline late Thursday morning and moved to a dedicated server. Not great timing, that’s for sure, but it should now be ready for whatever comes our way (unfortunately, round one will be Ivan, it appears)…

And… Webmasters take note: After many attempts at fixing trackbacks in this blog, a change of servers has done the trick! Trackback away! (I should add that I have comments moderation enabled, thus causing a delay for trackbacks as well)
