From The World Of Webcams: Dad’s Webcam Shames Drivers: A man has become so frustrated that other parents have ignored pleas from a school and police that he has set up a Web site aimed at “framing and shaming” the culprits.

New URL, Same Stuff: I instructed my co-worker Frank (the one who went to the Olympics in Greece) to check out this blog yesterday, and he promptly typed in “wxnation.com/weatherblogs/wire/” only to express frustration that he was at a “Page cannot be found” message. I decided, that was it — time to rename the blog URL from /log to /blog. I think I came up with that original folder name very late one night in Feb. 2003, when I started this web “log.” No one really calls it a log though. Since I’ve just made this change, why not make more, so, while I’ve enjoyed the alliteration of “WXnation Weblog,” I have cut the “We” out of the title as well. It’s now just a blog. All of those old links will redirect automatically to the blog folder by tonight, by the way. I’ve spruced up the navigation columns in the city pages as well to reflect these changes. Any negative feedback should be sent “ATTN: Frank” and I will make sure he gets them right away…

Happy Thanksgiving! As Promised: Higher-Quality Texas Fall Foliage Images

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone! I hope you have a great and safe holiday (travel weather info follows this entry). As promised in yesterday’s entry, I returned to that somewhat colorful tree located next to my daytime workplace in east Fort Worth and snapped a few pictures Wednesday afternoon. I also managed to get a photo of the Fort Worth skyline from Interstate 30 westbound just west of Loop 820 in east FW. The last image of a foggy field was taken in mid-November at the WXnation.com headquarters in far north Fort Worth. Click on any of these images for large versions:

Fall Colors In Texas Tree; Sooner Shaker: Minor Earthquake In Central Oklahoma; Severe Weather As Holiday Approaches

Fall Colors In Texas Tree: Fort Worth, Texas, Nov. 23, 2004. Image links to larger version.Fall Colors In Texas Tree: Fall foliage is usually comprised of two colors in Texas: brown and yellow, in that order.

Sometimes, a tree here or there can produce some nice colors.

I came across a color-confused tree just outside my workplace in east Fort Worth, Texas, and snapped some shots yesterday at about noon, just hours after a storm moved through and later produced 70 mph wind gusts in Dallas County (more on that in yesterday’s entry). The image links to a larger version.

I plan to take my “real” digital camera out later today and, should it be sunny, I may get some better shots of either this tree or a couple in nearby Keller.

As for the Fall Foliage webcams page that was on this Web site for the past couple of months, I removed it yesterday, since everything listed is well past its peak.

TV Meteorologists Undergo Tougher Testing; Snow Heads For Colorado; Another Great U2 Performance On SNL

TV Meteorologists Undergo Tougher Testing. I am fortunate to be working at a television station that has four fine folks who each earned a degree in Meteorology. From what I’ve been told, there are only one or two others on air in the Dallas-Fort Worth market who can say the same. Additionally, two of my station’s mets worked with a legend in these parts, a man named “World’s Greatest Weatherman,” Harold Taft, who died in 1991. It’s amazing how many “I’ve watched since the days of Harold Taft” e-mails our station receives to this day.

“Snow is on the way to Colorado!”: Denver Cams/Radars; Grand Junction Cams/Radars

Another great U2 performance on SNL, Another great U2 article and blog entry on the SNL appearance — the SNL message board is very active tonight as, on the show, U2 began into a fourth song when time was up for the viewing audience … The first Web site I worked on was a fan site called U2 At The End Of The WWW, which was online from Feb. 1997 to Feb. 2002 and (mostly) still lives on at Archive.org. My first impression of the new album is in the Nov. 19 entry below. After a couple days of listening to it, I’d say it is tied for best U2 album along with “Achtung Baby,” and “Joshua Tree” a close third…

WXnation.com Flip-Flop 2004!

Please don’t accuse me of being a flip-flopper, unless you are referring to the changes I made to this Web site Saturday evening. This blog looks the same, but the home and city pages on the site now have ads on the left and navigation links on the right. Not the norm, I know (most sites have their navigation to the left), but perhaps it’s time to shake things up a bit as the site approaches its 3rd anniversary in February… I’ve also given both columns the darker blue color. If there is a public outcry over all of this, I will make the appropriate adjustments — by 2008.

U2 Assembles Another Classic: Here’s a smaller and off-topic review compared to yesterday’s entry … I’ve been a fan of U2’s music since early 1994 (Oddly enough to some, it was “Zooropa” that got me hooked). I enjoyed their musical journey though the ’90s and have long thought their 1991 album “Achtung Baby” to be their masterpiece, but I’ve just finished listening to their 11th studio album, “How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb,” for the first time, and I’d put it right up there with “Achtung,” “The Joshua Tree” and “All That You Can’t Leave Behind.” You can hear the new album in its entirety online (for free) at U2.com. Upon the first listen, I especially like the first six tracks and the closer, “Yahweh.” Here’s a good review/article from USAToday.com. The CD is in stores Tuesday, and the tour kicks off March 1, 2005.

Review: Category 6 Off The Charts … Of Reason

‘Category 6’ Off The Charts … Of Reason: Sure, there was plenty of action, and at times I found it as entertaining as “The Day After Tomorrow,” but it didn’t take very long to see why The Weather Channel reportedly refused to air promos for the CBS natural disaster miniseries “Category 6: Day Of Destruction.”

The two-parter meandered between electric power grid issues and, in a perfect example of furthest-from-reality television, a catastrophic hurricane hitting Chicago just as F-5 tornadoes approached from the southwest.

Here’s what I learned from the miniseries: 1) Getting out of downtown Chicago can be accomplished in less time when debris is flying through the air at unheard-of speeds. 2) Based on the footage coming out of a commercial break, palm trees are plentiful along the shore of Lake Michigan. 3) If someone messes up the electrical grid in the Midwest to make a point about large companies’ cost-cutting, I’ll be able to watch the news unfold uninterrupted since I’m on the Texas grid; and 4) I think the bigger story for Nancy McKeon‘s character is how the Bank One building that was hit by a tornado in downtown Fort Worth, Texas, nearly five years ago ended up in Chicago. So much for the building’s renovation into luxury condos — and to think construction was nearly complete. (Seriously, the building shown near the end of the finale — now named “The Tower” — can be seen in this live webcam image, (thanks to one of our visitors, Jeff, for a right-side-up version of this).

What now? Maybe I’ll dust off my “Twister” DVD and give it a spin before the year is out. Ending on a positive note, the miniseries made some waves in the stormy world of ratings. Oh, and the special effects blew away those found in 1974’s “Earthquake,” which has had an incredible life on cable TV.
