What’s The Biggest Weather Story Of 2004? Vote!; Meteorologist Moves On; Hard Freeze Ends N. Texas Foliage; Year 4th-Hottest On Record; Spring Literally Ahead; TWC Spotlights Wild Year; Scientists Amazed At Mt. St. Helens’ Growing Dome

What’s The Biggest Weather Story Of 2004?: Vote! I’m guessing most will say it was one of the four hurricanes that hit Florida, but there were other big weather stories that unfolded this year. I chose 20 of them (and have now reduced that number to 10), and placed the poll in the right column. All of the stories were covered in this blog. Please take a moment to cast your vote!

Krista Villarreal In The NBC 5 Weather Center, Dec. 2004. Image links to large version in new windowMeteorologist Moves On: Since Jan. 1999, KXAS-TV (NBC 5) Meteorologist Krista Villarreal has been forecasting the ever-changing Texas weather, but she will soon take on new challenges as the weekday morning meteorologist at the NBC station in Pittsburgh, Pa., WPXI. More details and message board here… Krista let me snap the included photo from the NBC 5 Weather Center set on Wednesday. The image links to a larger version. Have fun forecasting in Pittsburgh!

Fall Foliage In East Fort Worth, Dec. 13. Image links to large version in new windowHard Freeze Brings N. Texas Fall Foliage To End: Temperatures in the mid-20s early Wednesday put an end to most of the especially colorful fall foliage in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex. I did manage to get one final shot of a tree that I thought was colorful, especially in contrast to the tree behind it. The picture on the right was taken Monday afternoon on East Lancaster west of Loop 820. As usual, the image links to a larger version.

2004 Fourth-Hottest On Record: 2004 Among the Hottest Years on Record The year 2004, punctuated by four powerful hurricanes in the Caribbean and deadly typhoons lashing Asia, was the fourth-hottest on record, extending a trend since 1990 that has registered the 10 warmest years, a U.N. weather agency said Wednesday.

Spring Literally Ahead: Spring Coming Earlier Than It Used To: The lilacs say so

TWC Series Looks At Wild Year: The Weather Channel(R) Special Primetime Series Unleashes a Year of Record-Breaking Weather: The events will be showcased in the network’s special primetime series titled “2004: Weather Unleashed,” which will air nightly during “Evening Edition” (9-11 p.m. ET), December 20-24.

Still Building: Scientists Amazed At Mount St. Helens’ Growing Dome: An unusually smooth and swiftly growing lava dome within the crater of Washington state’s Mount St. Helens volcano is an extraordinary and perplexing event with an unknown outcome, geologists said Tuesday.

Snow Scattered Over Great Lakes; Cold N. Texas, Colder U.S.; Christmas Lights Webcam Back; 6.7M Quake Hits Caymans; Weather Channel(R) Confirmed As Least Cluttered National TV Outlet; Astronomers Ready For Comet-Smashing Mission

Let It Snow: Snow Scattered Over Great Lakes: Snow fell around parts of the Great Lakes, Ohio Valley and the middle Appalachians on Tuesday, closing schools and causing traffic accidents in North Carolina.

Bundle Up! My dog Jake gets ready for sub-freezing temps... even though he's an indoor dogLows in the mid-20s are making for the coldest early morning since Feb. 13 in Dallas-Fort Worth. That’s nothing compared to much of the U.S., but cold enough for me (and for my dog, Jake, as seen in the picture to the right, which was taken this evening as my wife bundled him up for a cold night — even though he’s an indoor dog)… Nationwide temperatures map from Weather.com here

Blasting Toward Winter; Cool-Down For Parents On Strike; Animal Shelters Prep For Cold; UFO Explodes Over Chinese City; Meteor Showers Alarm Some; Rough Time For NASA Boss’ Departure; High-Tech Forecasting System To Pinpoint Roads

Blasting Toward Winter: Cold Air Blasting Into East, South

Cool-Down For Parents On Strike: Still On Strike: Even weekend temperatures in the lower 40s didn’t cool the determination of the parents on strike in Florida. I say make the kids stay out there for a night. Brrrr! (at least to me)

Alabama Animal Shelters Brace For Cold Weather

Strange News: UFO ‘Explodes Over Chinese City’: Police, working on the theory that it was a meteorite, went to investigate the matter, but they had found no evidence of what caused the nightly phenomenon, an officer said.

Space News: Geminid Meteor Showers Alarm Uninitiated: Bright flashes in the sky had residents in the Washington region calling 911 Saturday night for what was actually the annual Geminid Meteor Shower. Much more on the meteor shower in yesterday’s entry below…

Geminid Meteor Shower Under Way, Peaks Tonight; Diver, 80, Survives 18 Hours In Ocean; Tech-Savvy Blogger Rings In Holidays; 3rd Body Found In Utah Avalanches; Weather Aids Oil Spill Cleanup

Look Up, It’s Under Way: 2004 Geminid Meteor Gallerydetails … and story. Also: Predicted rates chart and audio … I must, at least on a subconscious level, be looking forward to this one since I had a rather vivid dream last night about the event. Many other strange-shaped, colorful things were dancing across the sky too, whatever that means…

Real Survivor: Diver, 80, Survives 18 Hours In Ocean: As night fell, the temperature dropped to the 50s in the coldest South Florida night this fall. Winds picked up from the north, churning the seas and tossing Ignacio Siberio around.

Non-Tech Knowledge: Tech-Savvy Mike Wendland Rings In Holidays: Cyber-friend Mike Wendland has posted an entry in his blog about his experience as a Salvation Army bell ringer in the Michigan cold. Another great Salvation Army program (which does very well here in Dallas-Fort Worth) is the Angel Tree, which allows individuals to choose a child and shop for him/her. Now, I can barely shop for myself, so fortunately my wife is happy to take over…

Other News: Third Body Found In Utah Avalanches: Fourth man still missing

Here are some pics I snapped on Wednesday and Thursday.

The first photo was taken in the NBC 5 newsroom. As you can see, this Christmas tree is a tad smaller than the one at Rockefeller Center.

The next two were taken from my front yard.

The final contribution is of Fort Worth’s skyline and was taken near North Beach Street just south of Loop 820 in North Fort Worth. Pier 1′s newly built headquarters is located to the far right.

Bigger Shock Than The Weather; Eclipse Pics; Panel On Hubble Rescue; Marketing Suborbital Frontier; Punxsy Phil Defends WX Museum; U.S. Marines To Storm-Ravaged Philippines; Foot Of Snow In Sierra As Storm Brews; Hurricane Forecast

Bigger Shock Than The Weather: Lorraine Emanuel in Massachusetts writes about her issue with cold, dry air: “I am literally afraid of static electricity. Everyone thinks it is a joke. They say it must be my electric personality or lack thereof. But I seem to get zapped when I touch any and everything.” Full article here

The culprit: My wife's Honda AccordAs for me, I’m not afraid of my wife’s Honda Accord (the culprit’s speedometer pictured, right), but I am highly annoyed that it gives me some massive shocks when it’s cold and dry. I try to be nice to the car, but sometimes I think it actually wants to zap the living daylights out of me!

What Is It?: Strange Streak Appears In Photo; Eclipse!; Californians Brace For Storm; Texas Records Wettest November On Record; Storm Leaves Trail Of Damage In Australia, Bizarre Weather Continues

What Is In This Picture? Strange Streak Photographed In Australia: From Astronomy Picture of the Day: “Meteor experts don’t think it’s a meteor. Atmospheric scientists don’t think it’s lightning. The photographer insists that the streak and flash on the above image has not been created digitally. So what is it? Nobody is sure. APOD’s editors do not claim to know – one purpose of posting this image is to mine the eclectic brain trust of APOD’s readers to help see if some unusual phenomenon was caught serendipitously.” An interesting discussion board has been set up for this mystery.
