Warmest January On Record In U.S.: I think I’ve forgotten what winter feels like. In north Texas, we had some bone-chilling temperatures — last fall (Dec. 7/8 to be exact). Since then, not so bad. Elsewhere, winter may be making a comeback by week’s end…

NWS Worker Accidentally Sends Tsunami Warning: Story | Others … I suspect the “transmit” button will be moved or a confirmation warning added in the program’s next version.

Proposed Bike May Broaden Horizons, Or …: When I was 13, I rode my bike just about every day — mostly because I had to in order to get to school on time (always a challenge since I was a night owl). It wasn’t long after that I retired the bike to the garage. Since then, my wife and at least one other family member have received shiny, new bikes for birthdays or Christmas. They happily rode them a couple of times, and — you guessed it — retired them to their garages. Well, I have news (actually, I just stumbled upon it): U.S. company floats idea of tank-track snow-bike. Now, wouldn’t that look great in anyone’s garage?

Super Bowl Snow: Detroit will get its wish for snow, and then some, if the National Weather Service’s forecast for up to 7 inches of snow by early Sunday comes to pass (no pun intended). Detroit says its prepared, despite a winter storm warning, which includes a forecast of wind gusts up to 40 mph Saturday night, causing blowing and drifting snow. While it probably won’t be as bad as the 1982 snowstorm for the last Super Bowl in Motown, it appears tonight there will be a “significant threat to travel.” All those in SE Michigan for the big game be especially careful! Temps should be in the mid-20s at game time, with wind chills in the mid-teens.

Bye January, we hardly felt your bite; Wire update: Links to weather, space news in red box; New Orleans Jazz Fest on; Big companies turn to weather; Video of Stardust capsule; Venus just after sunset

Bye January, We Hardly Felt Your Bite: Old Man Winter left the country last month (well, it appears he made an appearance in Alaska and Idaho [watches/warnings] in its final days).

As much as I complain about cold weather when it’s in my back yard, the past month was a real snoozer for people who love snow across much of the country. Spring-like weather dominated, with many locations basking in the warmest January on record.

Even much of Canada (populated Canada that is) has been in on the fun.

It’s not fun for many, though. Unlike me, many love the big snowstorms that threaten to cripple cities. They’ll take on the shoveling in exchange for a white wonderland, and a day off work or school.

Detroit wants snow for Super Bowl XL, though not from a storm on that scale (such as the one that hit in 1982, just in time for the first Super Bowl in the Motor City).

Snow lovers in other cities brought into the new year high hopes, only to find high temps. Many on CapitalWeather.com have expressed their frustrations over a winter largely without powder.

Moving from Washington, D.C. to Washington State, another record was not far off in January: Rain

So, what’s next? AccuWeather says February may bring a return to winter for some.

On the plus side, a warmer winter across much of the country translates to less money spent on those ever-increasing heating bills.

Wire Update — It’s In The Box: To the left, a red box contains a map to current weather watches and warnings. A new addition appears below that map: Links to the latest weather and space news from Google News. Check those topics out for constantly updated stories.
