‘It Could Happen Tomorrow’ Review: Sacramento Floods
Before Hurricane Katrina hit, The Weather Channel series “It Could Happen Tomorrow” was producing an episode about New Orleans flooding in a major hurricane. Then, it happened — before the show got off the ground.
On tomorrow night’s episode of “Tomorrow,” Hurricane Katrina’s floods become the example for a similar scenario in California’s capital, Sacramento.
The city, which sits in the previously flooded Central Valley, has a massive levee system where major rivers converge in the area.
After looking back at the failure of the levees in New Orleans, the show explains how the Sacramento levee system could fail, leaving some homes under more than 15 feet of water.
One of the experts interviewed said that a major flood sparked by heavy snow and heavy tropical rain from the “Pineapple Express” could leave the Central Valley under water, which would stretch 100 miles by 20 miles.
The episode finishes with evacuations and survival tips, which could have gone into more detail with a list of most important survival kit items. One way to increase the odds of survival — have an inflatable raft at the ready, as one couple does should it happen tomorrow.
The episode airs Sunday at 9:30 p.m. EDT on The Weather Channel.
