May 7, 2005

Spring nor’easter whips through S. New England; NWS’s new radar displays added to WXnation; Another NWS bill article; Oshkosh, Wisc. storm; Injured climbers rescued from Everest; NOAA reports record number of tornadoes in 2004; Insurance relief for Floridians; Insurance reform falls flat; NOAA/NWS to host severe weather, wildlife awareness week in Pacific NW; Yellowstone rated high for eruption threat; Mount St. Helens’ Johnston Ridge reopens

Spring Nor’easter: Strong storm whips through southern New England | Rainy, windy weekend; minor coastal flooding possible: Rain and wind will continue Saturday and Saturday night as the low moves south and east of Cape Cod…. Resources: National Weather Service experimental radar | Weather and webcams for Providence area, Boston area, and other cities

New National Weather Service Radar Images: You may have noticed the new NWS experimental radar link posted above: I’ve just added some additional radar image links to dozens of cities where the National Weather Service has launched “experimental radars.” A coverage map is here. The images have new, color displays, which I like a lot. The NWS original radar images have black radar background displays (which I also like). The NWS has included a link in the new radar pages asking for your feedback on the new product. For all of the cities/areas that have the new radar coverage, I’ve added “Experimental Radar” to the collection of radar links in the city pages

Here’s another article about the National Weather Service’s Web site in danger by a bill introduced last month by Sen. Rick Santorum, R-Pa.

Weather News: Gosh! Oshkosh, Wisc., residents get quick-hitting storm that turns downtown streets into raging rivers of hail and rain Friday

Injured climbers rescued from Everest 2 days after hit by avalanche, stranded by treacherous weather

NOAA reports record number of tornadoes in 2004: “In Oklahoma we have had tornadoes in every month of the year,” said Bob Anderson, director of Rogers County Emergency Management Office.

Floridians ravaged by last year’s four devastating hurricanes got a bit of insurance relief from the state Legislature. Full story
