Tropical Storm Arlene makes landfall west of Pensacola, Fla.; Severe storms break out in N. Plains, expected in Texas/Okla.; Western Mexico’s Volcano of Fire erupts; Hubble telescope to view comet collision

Image links to live full-size National Weather Service experimental radarTropical Storm Arlene Makes Landfall: Story from WTVJ-TV 6 … Arlene made landfall Saturday afternoon just west of Pensacola, Florida. Arlene’s maximum sustained winds dropped to 60 mph just before landfall, and then to 50 mph just after the center of circulation made landfall. Arlene’s winds remained at about 70 mph throughout Friday night and Saturday morning, but missed becoming a hurricane by 4 mph. High surf, some flooding and isolated tornadoes will be the largest concern from Florida to Louisiana.
