Wilma Most Intense Hurricane On Record In Atlantic Basin After Jumping From Category 2 To Cat. 5 Hurricane Overnight, Current Track Takes It To S. Florida: Wilma, with maximum sustained winds up from 110 mph Tuesday night to an incredible 175 mph in the 8 a.m. EDT advisory, could threaten S. Florida by Saturday as a major hurricane, but the forecast track could change. From NHC’s advisory: “The minimal central pressure is estimated to be 882 mb … 26.05 inches. This is the lowest pressure on record for a hurricane in the Atlantic Basin.” (See list later in this entry).

Wilma Becomes Hurricane In Caribbean; Track Moved Toward Florida: The forecast track is changing a lot, but that can be expected when we are so far out from a possible U.S. landfall of the record-tying Hurricane Wilma. The latest track suggests landfall on Florida’s west coast, or in the Keys. Of course, this can change, and anyone along the Gulf Coast and Florida should keep an eye on Wilma.

Tropical Storm Wilma Forms, Ties Record For Most Storms In Atlantic Season: Wilma forms in Caribbean: Long-term forecasts show the storm heading into the Gulf of Mexico and toward Florida or the northern Gulf Coast by the weekend. Forecasters say it could become a major hurricane as high water temperatures are favorable for development. From NOAA’s discussion:
